Rawai Beach
The southern coastline is not a sunbather’s paradise, but it is enjoyed for its scenery with plenty of places to stop, relax and enjoy the views out to sea and the surrounding islands. Promthep Cape is a famous picture postcard scene in Rawai that is popular with tourists and locals, who flock there each day to see the sun go down on another day. Promthep Cape is between Nai Harn and Rawai and is signposted from the Rawai beachfront road heading north.
Rawai is home to one of the island’s sea gypsy villages where the community speak their own language and follow their own religion. The big smiles and dark complexions of the sea gypsies are a welcome sight when visiting their fresh seafood market just left of Rawai Beach. The sea gypsies are experts at swimming and diving and although their lives are changing, they still hold onto the values of a nomadic life of the sea. The sea gypsies also collect and sell some beautiful seashells at small shops near the fish market, but for some more unique species, the Phuket Seashell Museum a few kilometres from the beach on Viset Road, is where you will see a collection of rare gold pearls, giant clams and fossils that date back 380 million years.
Promthep Cape
The famous postcard scene showing the protruding tip of Phuket is known as Promthep Cape, a popular place for locals and tourists to gather and take photographs of the scenic landscape, fringed with coconut trees and outlying islands. This is the most southernly point of the island that draws crowds at sunset, with views over the bay housing Nai Harn Beach. There is a walking trail to explore, that leads to the edge of the juxtaposing land, as well as an observation level built higher up on the hill. Here you will find the Kanchanaphisek Lighthouse, which is also a small museum, where visitors can climb up the stairs to the top of the look out tower. Close by is a Buddhist elephant shrine decorated with hundreds of elephants of all sizes, where locals pay respects by praying and burning incense.
Where to Eat in Rawai
Down in the southern part of Phuket there are quite a few up-and-coming restaurants that, if lacking the prestige and class of some of the more celebrated places elsewhere, still provide excellent value and good food.
Dining in this area is much more easy going and less frenetic than in the upmarket tourist areas, with alfresco dining being the norm. Despite the laid-back atmosphere the cuisine can be excellent and caters to a variety of tastes and budgets. |
